Becta calls for IT gap to be plugged
15 January 2008

New research has revealed that most schools are not making full use of technology, despite overwhelming parental support for IT

Research commissioned by the Birtish Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) has revealed that 95% of parents believe the use of interactive whiteboards and other high tech tools help their children learn at school. However, only a minority of schools are making full use of new technology.

The survey, carried out by polling company Populus, found that almost 80% of parents said they thought technology can make lessons more stimulating and engage their children in subjects they find difficult, while more than 60% said that the use of computers raises standards.

"This survey shows that parents understand how technology can put them in the driving seat", said Stephen Crowne, Becta's chief executive, on 15 January 2008. "As a parent, you want to know that your child is enjoying school; that they're getting access to the best support; and that if they're having any problems, you know straight away.

However, the research also found that only 20% of schools are using are using the new technology fully.

"There is a gap between what parents think about the way schools are using technology, and the reality – we need to close that generation gap," said Crowne. "We want to move technology from the margins to the mainstream in our schools and colleges and make the most of the opportunities and benefits it can provide."

The Populus survey also showed that 91% of parents believe the use of computers and the internet helps prepare young people for the world of work.

Crowne added: "The world is changing at an incredible pace. Technology and media are now everywhere in society and essential at work. We need people with the skills to thrive and learn effectively in this world."

Populus interviewed 2,058 parents of schoolchildren over the internet between 14-18 December 2007.
